About Snuffbottles

Chinese Snuffbottles and the powdered tobacco which they contained where at the heart of a fashion which had no equivalent in China's long history. Because of the extraordinary variety of styles, technique and materials. These miniature masterpieces became one of the most important art objects during the Qing Dynasty 1644 – 1912. The workshops flourished through the 18th Century, producing Snuff Bottles of the highest qualitay made of enamelled metal and glass, ivory, laquer, jade, porcelain and other semi-precious stones. Snuff Bottles also became the new currency for the purchase of favours, positions and advancement in government. Highly appreciated were Snuff Bottles being made in a variety of exotic materials: Amber, horn, coral, bamboo, tortoise shell. All were used by the Chinese craftsmen to display their skill and ingenuity.
